Forty-five years ago, a career in public accounting began with yellow #2 pencils and mandatory 60-hour workweeks. Financial records were kept on ledger paper, and audit success was measured by the weight of the documentation.

This time of year, charitable giving is on many people’s minds. Nonprofits increase our awareness of those in need, and during the Christmas season our hearts—and sometimes our wallets—tend to be a bit more generous.

Waiting for Santa is such an experience! When I was little, I would wake up as early as possible, tiptoe downstairs in the dark, and look over the presents—counting how many we got and maybe giving one or two a careful shake.

Tax time is just around the corner. Thankfully, the new tax law passed and our rates did not go up as expected. We even get to keep the Qualified Business Income deduction through 2026.

Every fall, I bring my patio furniture and a few other things inside for the winter. This year, I brought in two ornate birdhouses — and surprise, surprise — two squirrels popped out of one as I was heading to the basement.

In 1995, my world fell apart. My twin boys, then just 5 years old, were diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder—ADHD. At the time, much of the information available painted a bleak picture, suggesting they were destined for failure.
